Diary of extremely religious young man who was a member of the Church of England in Hampshire, England. At the beginning of the diary, the author recorded lists of readings (mostly concerning religion or temperance); lists of religious duties for weekdays and for Sundays; lists of family members and friends the author judged to be in need of prayer; and membership lists of the Sunday school classes he taught. Most of the following entries reflect the author's strong desire for the spiritual improvement of himself and others, particularly his father, with an emphasis on his evangelical efforts. In a few entries, the author mentioned Rev. W.A. Crawford. Other entries document his involvement in the temperance movement and his efforts to encourage others to sign oaths of abstinence. He wrote with great concern and affection for individual members of his Sunday school class, expressing his hope that he would always have the strength of character to use his influence for the good of his students.
